What is your “why”? What drives you to do this important work each day?
I do this work because I know how powerful it is when a student feels seen, safe, and supported. As someone who was once a misunderstood kid, and now as a mom and advocate, I carry that understanding with me every day. I show up because our Indigenous students deserve someone in their corner who celebrates their identity, helps them navigate challenges, and reminds them that they belong.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love the relationships. There’s nothing better than watching a student light up when they feel proud of themselves or when they trust you enough to open up. I also love finding creative ways to bring culture into the school — whether it’s through crafts, ceremonies, or just sharing space together. Every day is different, and that keeps it real and meaningful.
What would you most like families to know about the role of Student Support Workers in HRCE?
We’re here for the heart stuff. We build connections, offer a safe space, and help bridge gaps between home, school, and community. It’s not just about academics — it’s about walking alongside students as they grow, learn, and discover who they are. For Indigenous families especially, I want them to know their children have someone who will advocate for them, honour their culture, and support them every step of the way.
